Leeds United 1 West Ham 2 – David Moyes men claw back to win 1-2 away at Elland Road
2020-21 English Premier League report: Leeds United vs. West Ham United – Friday, 11 December 2020
Leeds United 1 West Ham 2
Headed goals from Tomas Soucek and Angelo Ogbonna helped David Moyes' West Ham United come back from being a goal down to win 1-2 at Elland Road against a struggling Leeds side on Friday night.
Leeds took an early lead when they were awarded a penalty after West Ham keeper Lukasz Fabianski brought down Patrick Bamford. Mateusz Klich put the hosts into the lead in the 5th minute when he converted the resultant spot-kick.
Leeds' problems in dealing with set pieces continued as goalkeeper Illan Meslier failed to stop Tomas Soucek's soft header from a Aaron Cresswell cross and the ball trickled in to give the Hammers the equalizer in the 25th minute.
Meslier atoned for his callousness by keeping out a vicious header from Fabian Balbuena a little after the break and made an excellent save from Sebastien Haller's overhead kick. But the Leeds custodian couldn't prevent the visitors from going into the lead as Ogbonna rose at the far post to power home Aaron Creswell's inviting free-kick ten minute before the final whistle.
For the hosts, chances were far and few between with their best opportunity coming when Rodrigo couldn't direct his header right from six yards as the ball went straight to Fabianski.
This was the Hammers' first win at Elland Road in two decades and as far as the current Premier League season goes, they have now won four out of their previous five outings and having one of their best spells in a long, long time.
For Marcelo Biesla's Leeds, what looked like a promising season when they started, is now drifting into a nightmare as the Whites seem destined to remain in the bottom-half of the table for quite some time. The Northern England club have won just one of their previous six Premier League outings and also have the dubious distinction of having conceded 22 goals which is only less than West Bromwich's 25 at the moment.
The victory for Moyes' men is a testimony to the fighting qualities they have acquired in recent times. Prior to the Elland Road win, the Hammers had won just once on the previous 26 occasions when they had conceded first in a Premier League game.
West Ham finished the weekend on an impressive sixth place with 20 (just 2 behind 5th placed Chelsea) which is one of their best starts to a season after 12 games. For Leeds, Friday night's home loss was their sixth in the season, leaving them at a lowly 14th spot just a point above beleaguered Arsenal's 13.
