Kentucky Derby Horses for 2015

Kentucky Derby contenders

We look at the Kentucky Derby Horses for 2015 and the early odds for the very first gem of horse racing's Triple Crown as it reveals three real exciting competitors.

The first weekend in May is quickly approaching meaning the field for the Kentucky Derby is beginning to take shape. We look at the main contenders and a live long shot to win the Run for the Roses:

American Pharoah:

American Pharoah put distance between itself and the rest of the Kentucky Derby favorites by winning the Rebel Stakes in March and has been among the notables since taking the Frontunner (G1) at Santa Anita last September. There are some concerns, nevertheless, that this Bob Baffert  horse might not have actually run enough due to ligament problems and hasn't been challenged.

Carpe Diem:

This horse has climbed up the early Kentucky Derby chances, opening as big as 20/1 before winning the Tampa Bay Derby (G2) in early March in spite of a three-month layoff. Carpe Diem has had outstanding showings in the Breeders' Cup, winning the Breeders' Futurity (G1) and putting 2nd in the Breeders' Juvenile (G1). These odds won't be around for long though if he continues this pace at the Blue Grass Stakes (G1) in April.

Another Baffett trainee, Dortmund staked his claim as a live Derby contender with a success in the San Felipe (G2) at Santa Anita in early March. Unlike his stablemate American Pharoah, Dortmund has been challenged in his races and has risen to the event each time. His sire, Big Brown, won both the Kentucky Derby and Preakness, so the Derby range is in his blood.

El Kabeir:

El Kabeir

The gap in between the trio of American Pharoah, Carpe Diem, and Dortmund, and the rest of the possible Kentucky Derby field is enormous – as displayed by the jump in odds for El Kabeir. He's risen up the board with a dominating 2 3/4-length win in the Gotham Stakes at Aqueduct in early March. Jockey C.C. Lopez presented a new running style for El Kaneir in that particular race, beginning far off the speed then turning it on to blow past the field in the home turn. This horse isn't scared to fight it's way to the front and showed true grit in doing so.
